The Killing of a Journalist

The documentary is about a murder committed in Slovakia. The man killed was the investigative reporter Ján Kuciak. His fiancée Martina Kušnírová was killed with him. It happened in their house on the twenty first of February 2018. Kuciak had been looking into links between politics and organised crime. The deaths brought the country out into the street. The protests were the largest since the fall of communism. Then something unexpected happened. A source leaked the secret case file to his colleagues. It held computers and encrypted messages belonging to the businessman named as the man behind the killing. He had close ties to the governing party. Reading through the messages, the journalists found a much larger picture, reaching into the courts and the police. Matt Sarnecki directed the hundred minute documentary, a Czech, Danish, American and German production finished in 2022.
