What The Kopeck Is About

Ivan Dykhovichny’s 2002 Russian comedy follows the fate not of a person but of a car: the first Soviet Lada, known to everyone as the kopeck. It starts out with Brezhnev’s daughter and then passes from hand to hand, out of the last Soviet years and into the wild period after perestroika, among gangsters and freshly minted oligarchs. Each owner brings the film a new scene, and thirty years of a country’s history get told from the seat of a single car. Dykhovichny wrote the script with the novelist Vladimir Sorokin. Andrey Krasko and the musician Sergey Shnurov are in the cast. The structure belongs to the tradition of the episodic film in which an object passes from owner to owner.
