What The Last Trapper Is About
Norman traps in the forests of the north; with his wife he lives almost entirely off the land, makes his money selling furs and meets the winter with his dogs. The film sits between documentary and fiction: Norman is a real trapper playing himself, but the scenes are staged. The landscape and his relationship with the dogs are its strongest element. One note is needed: trapping is a contested practice and the film stands entirely on the trapper's side, presenting it as balance with nature and giving the opposing view no room. Nicolas Vanier later made Belle and Sebastian.
