What The Life and Passion of Jesus Christ Is About
The 1903 French film by Lucien Nonguet and Ferdinand Zecca is among the Pathé studio's most ambitious early productions. The story from the birth of Jesus to his ascension is presented in around thirty tableaux, each shot with a fixed camera and staged like a theatre scene. Its historical importance is as an attempt at long-form narrative while cinema was still in the stage of short attractions. Some prints were coloured by hand, and those versions were among the most spectacular images of their period. The effects are simple but inventive: flying angels, halos of light. Seen now the telling is static and the acting extremely broad. Who it's for: viewers interested in the history of early cinema and in religious narrative. Who it's not for: anyone wanting narrative flow, or who finds acting of the silent period hard going.
