What The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon Is About
Susanoo is the youngest son of Izanagi and Izanami, the heavenly pair who made the Earth. Still a child, he loses his mother, and against his father’s rebukes he decides to find her, setting out to ask his brother and his sister for guidance. Based on the Shinto myth of the storm god’s battle with Yamata no Orochi, the film was Toei Doga’s sixth feature and opened in Japan on 24 March 1963. It was shot in Toei’s anamorphic Toeiscope, and what sets it apart is the modernist, abstracted design of the characters, the backgrounds and the colour. Yugo Serikawa directed. It won Toei Doga the Noburo Ofuji Award for 1963 and went on to influence animators of later generations.
