What The Lone Ranger Is About
This is the first of the two theatrical features built on the Lone Ranger, directed by Stuart Heisler in 1956, with the two faces audiences already knew from radio and television carrying on: Clayton Moore behind the mask and the Mohawk actor Jay Silverheels as Tonto. The territorial governor asks the Ranger to look into strange raids on settlers, and the trail runs to Reese Kilgore, a wealthy rancher who wants the silver under a mountain the tribe holds sacred and profits from setting the two sides against each other. The genre habits of the period are all here, but locating the conflict in greed rather than in the tribe makes it steadier than most of its year. A second feature followed in 1958.
