What The Man in the Hat Is About
The Man in the Hat sets off from Marseille in a small Fiat 500 with a framed photograph of an unknown woman on the seat beside him. Behind him is a Citroen with five bald men squeezed into it. Why are they following him, and how is he going to lose them? Travelling north through France he runs into razeteurs, women with stories to tell, bullfights, a damp man, mechanics, nuns and a convention of crystallographers. There is almost no dialogue; the space is filled by new songs from Stephen Warbeck and Schubert Lieder sung by Mark Padmore. Warbeck, a composer, made the film with John-Paul Davidson, and it is his first work as a director. Ciaran Hinds plays the lead.
