Douglas Rain What The Man Who Skied Down Everest Is About
The Japanese skier Yūichirō Miura tried to ski down Everest in 1970. An expedition of more than eight hundred people was put together and twenty-five tons of equipment carried in, and six people died in an accident in the mountain’s icefall, which remains one of the worst in Himalayan history. From a point high on the mountain Miura made a descent of two thousand metres with a parachute on his back and an oxygen mask on his face, reaching speeds close to a hundred and ninety kilometres an hour. The documentary sets the expedition footage against a narration read by Douglas Rain. A Canadian, Japanese and American production, it won the Oscar for best documentary, the first Canadian feature and the first sports film to do so. It hides neither the achievement nor its cost.
