What The Man Without a Map Is About
A private detective is hired by a woman to find her missing husband. The evidence contradicts itself, the leads run out and the case becomes unsolvable, and the further he goes the more the detective’s own life starts to resemble the life of the man he is looking for. Hiroshi Teshigahara directed, and Kobo Abe adapted the screenplay from his own novel The Ruined Map. It was the last film the two of them made together. Shintaro Katsu, known at the time for the Zatoichi films, plays the lead, with Etsuko Ichihara and Kiyoshi Atsumi in the cast. The film puts the experience of getting lost in a modern city into the shape of a detective story and, by the end, makes clear that finding the missing man is not what it is after.
