The Mehta Boys

Boman Irani's 2024 directing debut follows a young architect forced to spend forty-eight hours in the same flat as his father after his mother's death. Amay and his father cannot tolerate each other; the death has left both alone with their own guilt. The film takes place almost entirely between the two of them. Irani both directs and plays the father, and worked on the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris. What the film gets right is building reconciliation not through a conversation but through ordinary things done together: cooking, repairs, silence. Avinash Tiwary shows anger by withdrawing rather than shouting. Its weakness is that the women characters serve only a supporting function. Who it's for: viewers who like father and son drama and single-location character films. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot and dramatic development, or unprepared for the weight of grief.
