The Musicians

Grégory Magne's 2025 French film is about a concert project bringing four Stradivarius instruments together. Astrid manages to realise the concert her father dreamed of for years; the instruments have been found, the hall arranged and the music world is waiting. The problem is the players: when the four virtuosi come together they cannot play as one. Each is so attached to their own manner, their own tempo and their own rightness that no common sound emerges. The film follows the rehearsals and takes its humour from that friction while describing what being an ensemble requires. The value of the instruments and the question of insurance create an odd pressure in the background. The tone is light and the characters are drawn without becoming caricatures. Who it's for: viewers who like French comedy drama about music. Who it's not for: anyone expecting technical depth about classical performance; the film concentrates on relationships.
