What The Navigator Is About
A spoiled rich man and the woman he wants to marry find themselves alone on an empty ocean liner, and since neither knows how to do anything, survival becomes the problem. Buster Keaton builds the comedy on one idea: an enormous ship and two incompetent people. The jokes come out of the space itself, the galley, the deck, the water below. Keaton's face never changes, and that is the joke, because the expression holds steady as the danger grows. The underwater sequence is startling given what was available at the time. An unusually good entry point to silent comedy.
