What The Night Is My Kingdom Is About
Raymond, who has lost his sight in an accident, returns to his family. But the house receives him not as an adult but as a child who must constantly be protected, and that attention pushes him further back. Then he meets a woman who works at a centre where blind people learn to read and write in raised script; there he sees how others live and tries to build his own life again. The film tells blindness not as a tragedy but as a condition made heavier by the attitude of those around a person. The account presents pity, too, as an obstacle. Jean Gabin plays the lead in Georges Lacombe’s hundred and ten minute French film, completed in 1951.
