What The North Avenue Irregulars Is About
When a member of the congregation loses the church’s savings on betting, the new pastor decides to go after the bookmakers running the town. None of the men will help him, so he turns to the women of his parish, and what he ends up with is an amateur surveillance unit trailing the local mob around town. Don Tait’s screenplay is loosely based on the Reverend Albert Fay Hill’s account of taking on organised gambling in New Rochelle, New York, in the 1960s. Edward Herrmann plays the pastor, with Barbara Harris, Susan Clark, Karen Valentine and Cloris Leachman among his recruits. Disney released it on 9 February 1979, and it went out in Britain under the title Hill’s Angels.
