What The Officers' Ward Is About
In the first days of the war a piece of shrapnel destroys the face of a young lieutenant named Adrien. He spends the remaining five years in a Paris hospital, in a ward set aside for officers with severe facial wounds. There are no mirrors in the ward; he does not see his own face for a long time, and the film does not show it to us either. Francois Dupeyron tells the war through what comes after it: operations, friendships, the fear of going outside. In France these men were called the broken faces, and a few of them were in the room at Versailles when peace was signed.
