The Old Man & the Gun

David Lowery drew the script from David Grann’s 2003 New Yorker piece; the opening card only calls the story mostly true. Cinematographer Joe Anderson shot it on Super 16, calling the format a time machine while insisting the team was not copying an older decade. A slow, fine grain stock was underexposed to raise the grain, then balanced with modern primes and colour grading. Lowery had written zooms into the script, so vintage Canon zoom lenses came too. The story sits in Texas, yet roughly two thirds of the shoot was in Ohio. Lowery picked Fort Worth because the real Forrest Tucker was based there at his peak and because it looks older than neighbouring Dallas; he wanted everything there but says Texas incentives fell short. Redford had said this might be the picture that capped his career; he died in September 2025 at 89. The role brought a 76th Golden Globes acting nomination in the musical or comedy category, won by Christian Bale. The National Board of Review listed it among its independent titles of the year. A good fit if you care less about how the robberies are built than about why the man will not stop. Not for anyone hoping the pace lifts once detective and robber meet; that is where the film slows.
