What The Outside Man Is About
A French hitman is flown to Los Angeles for a single job and carries it out without trouble. Then the man who hired him is killed, the contract turns around, and the assassin becomes the target. He has no allies, barely enough English, and a city of freeways and motels to hide in. Jacques Deray drops the cold professional of French crime cinema into American sunlight, and the sense of being foreign everywhere becomes the real subject. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays the hitman, with Ann-Margret, Roy Scheider and Angie Dickinson around him and Venice Beach doing a lot of the talking.
