What The Overlanders Is About
The Second World War is coming close to northern Australia, people are being evacuated and everything left behind is burned. Rather than shoot their cattle, a mixed group decides to drive them halfway across the continent, from Wyndham in Western Australia through the Northern Territory to pastures north of Brisbane in Queensland. Harry Watt's 1946 film is built like a western, except the heroes are the herd and the distance itself. Chips Rafferty leads the drove. It counts as an early and effective example of a film in which the Australian landscape reads as a threat.
