What The Passionate Thief Is About

New Year's Eve in Rome. Tortorella is a middle-aged film extra who cannot get work. What she wants out of the night is a decent time, a warm table and perhaps a little respect. She drags two men along with her: Umberto, an actor whose career is behind him, and a pickpocket. The pickpocket means to work, she means to enjoy herself, and as the night goes on neither of them gets what they came for. Mario Monicelli directs, with Anna Magnani, Totò and Ben Gazzara. It started from stories by Alberto Moravia. It sets loneliness inside the shape of a comedy, so that what is funny and what hurts come from the same place.
