What The Pee Wee 3D: The Winter That Changed My Life Is About
Eric Tessier's 2012 Canadian film follows Janeau, twelve, who moves with his father to a small town after his mother's death. There he befriends Julie, a goalkeeper, and at her insistence joins the hockey team, but the team does not accept him easily. The film does not hide the competitive side of children's sport. Pressure from coaches, the expectations of parents and the hierarchy inside the team all sit within the narrative; winning is not offered as a solution on its own. A real children's tournament held in Quebec provides the ground. Antoine Olivier Pilon appears in an early role. The ice sequences are the production's most ambitious element. Who it's for: those who like family films and sports drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting grief treated in depth; the film touches it briefly and gives its focus to the rink.
