What The Postman Is About
Abbas works in the post in Cairo. He is appointed to run the post office of a small village in Upper Egypt. In the village he is bored and feels he does not belong there. So he starts secretly reading the villagers’ letters. One of the letters he reads puts him straight into someone’s life. A young woman has written to the man she loves and told him how things stand. Abbas is no longer only a reader; he is part of what happens. The film takes up a closed village order and the pressure built on honour. The story is adapted from a novel by Yahya Haqqi. Shoukry Sarhan appears in Hussein Kamal’s Egyptian film of 1968.
