The Price of Love

The story is set in Corfu at the beginning of the twentieth century. A woman works in a factory. She has four children. Her husband drinks. Keeping the house going falls on her. A nobleman who has lost his money appears. He wants to marry the eldest daughter. What he is after is what the family earns, and their earnings are small enough already. He takes the girl away from the house. Then he starts bargaining with her mother over the dowry. In that time the girl comes to see him for what he is. She sees that he is looking only after himself. She refuses to marry him. She decides to raise the child she is expecting on her own and starts working for it. The story comes from a novel by Konstantinos Theotokis. Anny Loulou, Toula Stathopoulou and Stratis Tsopanellis appear in the hundred and ten minute film, a Greek production Tonia Marketaki finished in 1984.
