What The Roses of the Desert Is About
In 1940, during Italy’s campaign in Libya, a medical battalion is sent to the oasis of Sorman. The soldiers’ job is to look after their own unit, but at the insistence of an Italian missionary nearby they start treating the local villagers as well and come in time to work less as an occupying force than as a medical team. The war takes no notice; as the front comes closer the campaign they boasted of turns into a fast retreat and the unit has to leave the oasis. Mario Monicelli’s hundred and two minute Italian film is one of the director’s last works; Michele Placido and Alessandro Haber appear. It was completed in 2006.
