What The Samurai I Loved Is About
Bunshiro Maki, a young samurai stuck at the bottom of the hierarchy, is a fine swordsman who can never rise. When his father is accused of plotting against the clan and forced to take his own life, the family’s standing goes with him, and Fuku, whom he has loved since childhood, is sent to Edo as the clan lord’s concubine. Years later Fuku has borne the lord a son, and Maki learns that those who want the succession secured are planning to do away with the woman and the child; he takes two childhood friends with him and tries to stop it. Mitsuo Kurotsuchi’s hundred and thirty one minute Japanese film is set in the Edo period and is about lost time rather than swordplay. It was completed in 2005.
