What The Scarlet Empress Is About
The German princess Sophia is sent to Moscow to be married to the heir to the Russian throne and finds a feeble-minded man who plays with toy soldiers. Nobody at court helps her, so over the years she turns the army, the bedroom and finally the throne to her own account. Von Sternberg is not trying to tell history: the palace is built as a crushing set of contorted statues hanging from ceilings and doors too vast to move. Dietrich goes from innocent girl to glacial ruler almost without raising her voice. Visually one of the wildest Hollywood films of its day.
