What The Scarlet Flower Is About
In a fairy-tale Russia of centuries ago, a merchant leaving for market asks his three daughters what they want brought back; the elder two name valuable things and the youngest asks for a scarlet flower. The flower he eventually finds is on a distant island and belongs to a beast, which turns the gift into a debt. The film comes from Sergey Aksakov’s tale of 1857, scripted by Natalya Ryazantseva. Irina Povolotskaya does not treat this Russian Beauty and the Beast as light work for children; she stages it in compositions built like paintings. Made at the Gorky studio, it was finished in 1977 and shown in August 1978.
