What The Scarlet Hour Is About

An unhappy wife works on a younger man who is infatuated with her until he agrees to take part in a jewel robbery, and the job goes wrong almost at once. What follows is less a crime picture than a study of two people lying their way through the aftermath. Michael Curtiz both produced and directed, working from Frank Tashlin’s story "The Kiss Off". Paramount gave this modest thriller VistaVision and three new faces at the same time: Carol Ohmart, Tom Tryon and Jody Lawrance all carry a feature for the first time here, and Elaine Stritch makes her film debut. Nat King Cole turns up to sing "Never Let Me Go". It sits among the least discussed of Curtiz’s late films.
