What The Sea That Thinks Is About
The film builds a structure in which another story, written by a character inside it, is set within the story a screenwriter is writing; as the layers accumulate it becomes unclear which level is the real one. The director supports this with optical illusions, simple visual tricks and games of perspective, until the viewer realises that what has been watched all along is himself. Gert de Graaff’s hundred minute Dutch production works as both fiction and documentary and takes the apparatus of cinema itself as its subject. Bart Klever, Devika Strooker and Don Duyns appear. It was completed in 2000 and treats dream and illusion on the same plane.
