The Seventh Sense

Ahmed Mekky's 2005 Egyptian film follows a young man who wants to be a kung fu competitor. Finding there is no place for the sport in Egypt, he then meets a fortune teller and begins hearing other people's thoughts, and the ability changes his life. The humour comes from the ability being useless. The lead knows what people are thinking but the knowledge gives him no advantage; it complicates everything instead. It is Mekky's first work as a director and carries the language of Egyptian youth comedy of the period. The cutting is fast, the joke density high and the references local. Ahmed Al Fishawy leads. Who it's for: those who like 2000s Egyptian comedy. Who it's not for: viewers unfamiliar with the local culture; most of the jokes rest on Egyptian popular culture of the time.
