What The Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch Is About
Noriaki Yuasa's 1968 Japanese film follows Sayuri, taken from an orphanage to her family's house. The house is large and silent; there is another girl inside and the woman said to be her mother behaves as though she does not know her. The film builds its horror from a child's view. Sayuri is not sure whether what she sees is real; the people in the house do not believe her, and the narrative withholds which is true for a long time. It is adapted from Kazuo Umezu's manga, and the framing and make-up resemble the comic directly. The effects are handmade and look naive today; against that, the sense of threat inside the house is effectively built. Who it's for: those who like sixties Japanese horror and manga adaptation. Who it's not for: viewers looking for realistic horror; the film runs on the logic of a children's tale and contains threat directed at children.
