What The Soup Is About
Francesco and Giovanni are two tramps on the edge of Rome who live by going through bins, and a misunderstanding lands them in jail. There they meet a man arrested for eating in restaurants and walking out without paying, who teaches them how it is done, and the three set off on a run of escapades across Tuscany. Sergio Citti treats hunger as comic material and as a real subject at once. In the sixties he was the man who gave Pasolini’s screenplays their Roman street language, and the vagabond poetry here comes straight out of that. His brother Franco Citti and Ninetto Davoli, both Pasolini regulars, play alongside Roberto Benigni. It went to the Berlin festival in 1981.
