What The Spectator Is About
Valeria watches her own life in Turin the way an audience watches a stage, present but never quite involved. Her interest in the daily movements of her neighbour Massimo hardens into obsession, and when he leaves for Rome she follows him there. What she does not expect is to befriend Flavia, the woman Massimo lives with, and that friendship drops her into the middle of the two lives she had only been observing from a distance. Paolo Franchi made this ninety eight minute Italian film as his first feature, and its quiet, held back manner turns what could have been a thriller into a study of loneliness instead. Barbora Bobulova, Andrea Renzi and Brigitte Catillon star; it screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2004.
