What The Story of Me Is About
When Roberto was six his mother placed him in a state institution that promised to turn children into doctors and lawyers. The institution was not that. By thirteen he still could not read, had come into contact with drugs and had run away more than a hundred times, and the records had written him off as beyond recovery. Then a French psychologist came to visit. Luiz Villaça’s film is built on the life of Roberto Carlos Ramos, today a teacher and storyteller in Brazil, with Maria de Medeiros playing the psychologist. What it describes is how far the fate of a child can be moved by someone actually paying attention.
