What The Strange Love of Martha Ivers Is About
Three childhood friends share a terrible secret: Martha, Walter and Sam. Years later the ambitious Martha has married the timid Walter; she is a cold businesswoman and he is the district attorney, and between them they run Iverstown as they please. Sam’s return after a long absence disturbs that arrangement, because nobody knows what he remembers or what he wants. Lewis Milestone’s noir is less interested in the crime than in the lives built on top of it. Barbara Stanwyck and Van Heflin lead, and this was Kirk Douglas’s first appearance on screen.
