What The Student of Prague Is About
Balduin, a penniless student in Prague, is tired of beer halls and sword duels; he wants love but does not believe he has anything to offer in return. He does not even notice Lyduschka, who is in love with him. At that point a mysterious moneylender named Scapinelli offers him a fortune. There is one condition, and the condition has to do with what is standing in the mirror. Remaking the 1913 film of the same name, Henrik Galeen sets the story squarely inside German expressionism. Conrad Veidt plays Balduin and Werner Krauss plays Scapinelli, two of the most familiar faces of the period. The idea of a man parting from his own reflection works here less as a ghost story than as a story of conscience. It is one of the essential works in the horror vein of silent cinema.
