The Sun Rises on Us All

A man sacrificed himself for the woman he loved, taking on the blame for a crime she committed. Believing she can never repay that sacrifice, she leaves to build a new life. Years later the former lovers meet again; their daily lives, estranged and yet still entangled, slowly bring the pain of the past into the open. One of them is looking for forgiveness while the other wants to be let go. The film declares neither of them in the right or in the wrong; it tells what a debt does to a relationship. The account folds the present and the past into each other rather than giving them separately. Xin Zhilei and Zhang Songwen appear in Cai Shangjun’s hundred and thirty one minute Chinese film, completed in 2025.
