What The Thirty Nine Steps Is About
London, 1914. Richard Hannay is a mining engineer over from South Africa for a short stay. One night his neighbour Colonel Scudder knocks on his door with a story that sounds insane: Prussian sleeper agents are planning to kill a visiting minister and start the war early. The next day Scudder is murdered in Hannay's rooms and the killing is pinned on him. He runs for Scotland. Both the police and the agents are after him, and the man running the agents sits inside the government. Don Sharp directs, adapting John Buchan's novel. A hundred and two minutes, with Robert Powell as Hannay. Hitchcock filmed the same book; this version stays closer to it, and stages its finale on the face of Big Ben.
