What The Truce Is About
Martín Santomé is a forty-nine-year-old office worker, a widower for more than twenty years, with three grown children and a short stretch left before retirement. Just as he reaches a threshold he has no idea how to fill, he falls in love with a young woman newly assigned to his department, Laura Avellaneda, and does the one thing he was sure he would never do, holding on to the chance of a late happiness. The title comes from exactly that: the affair is not a rescue but a brief truce in the middle of a long solitude. Sergio Renán adapted Mario Benedetti’s 1960 novel, written in the form of a diary, from a screenplay by Aída Bortnik and with Héctor Alterio in the lead. It became the first Argentine film nominated for the foreign-language Oscar.
