What The True Story of Ah Q Is About
The film was adapted from Lu Xun’s novella of the same name from 1921 and takes place during the revolution of 1911. Ah Q is a poor peasant who wants to rise above his class, or at least to get out of the grinding poverty he is in. First he thinks a good marriage will lift him, then he decides that joining the revolution is the only way. That he finds an explanation to make himself right after every defeat, and genuinely believes it, is the real subject Lu Xun was writing about. Yan Shunkai plays the lead in Cen Fan’s hundred and twenty five minute Chinese film, completed in 1981.
