The Unsuspected

Michael Curtiz's 1947 film is a mystery set in the world of radio. Victor Grandison presents a popular programme recounting real murders, and his voice and manner are known across the country. When his secretary is found hanged and his wealthy niece disappears, oddities begin accumulating around the house. The construction does not follow classic puzzle form; the audience learns certain things early and the tension comes from when the characters will notice. Claude Rains's Grandison is a performance that uses the voice itself as a weapon. Curtiz's visual language is extremely ambitious, and the mirrors, staircases and use of shadow make it one of the most ostentatious examples of noir style. Who it's for: viewers who love classic Hollywood noir and mystery. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a flawless chain of logic; the script puts atmosphere ahead of plot.
