What The Violin Teacher Is About
Laerte is a gifted violinist who fails the audition for the São Paulo symphony orchestra. To make a living he starts teaching music to teenagers in Heliópolis, one of the city's largest favelas. There is no interest in the classroom, no instruments and no patience at all. Over time both the students and the teacher change, though the film refuses to turn that into an easy story of rescue and keeps the violence of the neighbourhood in frame. Sérgio Machado directs, with Lázaro Ramos as Laerte. The conductor Marin Alsop appears as herself. It shows what music saves and also what it does not.
