The Voice of Merrill

A woman is found dead in her flat. She had been convicted of blackmail. The police question three men. Each of them could have had a reason. The first is Hugh Allen, a writer whose work is not going well. The second is Ronald Parker, Allen’s publisher. The third is a playwright, Jonathan Roach. There is something between Allen and Roach’s wife Alycia. That tie makes the investigation harder to read. The film keeps the answer back until the end. John Gilling wrote it with Gerald Landeau and Terence Austin, for Tempean Films. It was made for twenty five thousand pounds, and its distributor thought well enough of it to move it up the bill. It was released in the United States in 1953 under a different title. Valerie Hobson and James Robertson Justice appear in the eighty three minute film, a British production John Gilling finished in 1952.
