The Wanderer

The account is set in rural France in the 1890s. Augustin is never still. He goes off three times. The first time, as a boy boarding near Bourges, he gets lost in the woods. He comes upon a chateau where an engagement party is going on. There he meets Yvonne and the two fall in love. Back at school he hears she is in Paris. He follows, searches in vain, and meets a woman who has been jilted by her lover. A few years later his friend François finds Yvonne and brings the two together. They marry. But the next day Augustin leaves to keep an old promise he made to Yvonne’s brother. François stays with the pregnant Yvonne while they wait for him. Brigitte Fossey and Jean Blaise take the leads in Jean-Gabriel Albicocco’s French film of 1967.
