Ihor Portianko What The Wild Fields Is About
Herman has to go back to his native Donbas after years away, because his brother has suddenly disappeared. What he is chasing leads him to childhood friends, to the local mafia and to a crowd of people somewhere between the real and the imagined, and in the end, to his own surprise, he decides to stay. Yaroslav Lodygin’s first feature is adapted from Serhiy Zhadan’s novel of 2010, written four years before the war in Donbas began. The film arrived in 2018, in the middle of that war, which is why it is now also read as a story about choosing to stay in a place.
