The Woman in the Line

Benjamín Ávila's 2025 Argentine film follows Andrea as she visits her imprisoned son for the first time. The other women in the visitors' queue eye her with suspicion at first; she comes from the middle class and does not belong to this world. Over time she gains their trust and becomes an organised voice against how the prison system works. What the film does best is present the queue itself as a social space: the women share information there, build solidarity and teach each other the rules of the system. Natalia Oreiro's performance carries the transformation without forgetting the character's class position. The narrative weakness is that the question of whether her son is guilty is addressed too late. Who it's for: viewers interested in Latin American social cinema and films about the prison system. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding content about prison violence, or wanting a clear resolution.
