What The Wooden Camera Is About
The film is set in a township near Cape Town. Madiba and Sipho are fourteen. The two of them play along the railway line. One day a dead body rolls to their feet. A gun and a camera come out of the man’s clothes. Sipho takes the gun and Madiba the camera. That choice sets their paths apart. Madiba starts filming what is around him. He shows his recordings to nobody. In the city he meets a girl called Estelle. Estelle is the child of a well off family. Their friendship troubles the girl’s father. Sipho for his part robs people with the gun. Madiba keeps out of it but does not drop the friendship. Junior Singo and Dana de Agrella take the leads in Ntshaveni Wa Luruli’s French, British and South African coproduction of 2003.
