What The Xango from Baker Street Is About
Rio de Janeiro, 1886. A Stradivarius violin given to Emperor Pedro II is stolen. Sarah Bernhardt makes a suggestion: send to London for Sherlock Holmes. Holmes and Watson arrive by ship. But something else is happening in the city: young women are being killed and the murderer leaves a violin string behind. Holmes has to work in a tropical city where the language is Portuguese and the beliefs are ones he knows nothing about, and his method does not work here. Miguel Faria Jr. directs the Brazilian film; two hours and four minutes, adapted from Jô Soares's novel of 1995, with Joaquim de Almeida as Holmes, Anthony O'Donnell as Watson and Maria de Medeiros as Sarah Bernhardt. The book had been a considerable bestseller in Brazil.
