What The Youth Killer Is About
Jun works in the family business and experiences his parents’ love as a siege. When they forbid him from seeing his girlfriend, the pressure spills over and two killings happen in one night. Kazuhiko Hasegawa’s first film is adapted from a story by Kenji Nakagami, which had itself come out of a real case of parricide in 1974. The film does not explain the crime; it films the aftermath, the hours of a young man caught between running and staying. It was produced jointly by Shohei Imamura’s company and ATG, and Kinema Junpo named it the best Japanese film of the year.
