Then Came You

A film set around a hospital in America. Calvin handles baggage at an airport. He is obsessed with his health; he constantly believes he has caught something and joins a support group at the hospital. In the group is a young woman named Skye. She is genuinely ill and her treatment options have run out. She mocks his fears. Skye has made a list of things she wants to do. She is not in a condition to do them, so she has Calvin do them instead. The list is made of odd items and each one puts him in front of his own fear. At the same time Calvin is in love with a woman who works at the airport; Skye enters that too and tries to manage it. What the film is interested in is not death but fear itself: one is afraid of dying and does not die, the other is dying and is not afraid. The narrative sits between comedy and drama and gives more weight to the second in its last section. Maisie Williams plays Skye and Asa Butterfield plays Calvin. Nina Dobrev and David Koechner are in the cast. Peter Hutchings directed. A suitable choice for anyone who likes youth drama and bittersweet comedy. For a viewer wanting a new narrative, the film follows the known patterns of its genre.
