What Thieves' Highway Is About
Nick comes home from the war meaning to settle down with his fiancée. Then he learns his father was beaten and robbed by Mike Figlia, a trucker with mob connections. He loads a truck with apples, drives to the San Francisco produce market and sets out to settle the account. On the road he meets Rica. Jules Dassin directed; the screenplay is by A. I. Bezzerides from his own novel. It is noir, but it happens in a truck cab and among the market stalls rather than in an office. This was Dassin's last American film; he was blacklisted and left for Europe. The studio softened the ending, and it does not fit.
